Girls just wanna have sun! When I got summer on my mind, I feel the need to step out of the norm and escape the daily grind. The best quick fix? A mini vacay in my city. Eat, beach (ehhh… a park pond), sleep repeat.
Amsterdam is known for being swamped by tourists during summer time. It’s busy. It’s hectic. But if you know the right places, you’ll find yourself in the ultimate holiday city spot. I teamed up with the new fragrance Mexx City Breeze (fruity orange & jasmine does the trick!) and made a definitive list of all the places in Amsterdam that feels like a break from everyday life.
Meet & greet with Yara!
And… The best news is: we can celebrate a mini vacay together! We’ve arranged a cool meet & greet at one of my favorite city escapes: Canvas rooftop bar in Amsterdam (get a sneak peek of this gorgeous place in my latest rooftop bar video!) Join me on the 31st of May, from 19:00 – 20:30. How? All you have to do is upload a photo of your favorite city escape and use the hashtag #MexxCityBreeze. I’d love to meet you! :)
I’ll pick five winners, and you can bring your best friend too! We’ll toast on summer and city escapes with cocktails. Also, if you’re lucky, you’ll find yourself winning one of ten boxes fully packed with goodies.
*The contest will end on the 29th of May, I’ll let you lucky girls know via Instagram direct messages.
Now, let me start off sharing my favorite getaways in my own city:
The perfect terrace. Check. Great bites. Check. Meneer Nieges is one of my favorite getaways for late night drinks and long weekends. A lounge away from home. Where Instagram-worthy interiors meet riverside patios. Tranquillo!
One of my favorite hidden gems in the Jordaan. This cool canal-side cafe is not overflowed by tourists yet and packed with neighbors who come there for board games (they’ve got quite a selection!), poetry nights, snacks and good bar food. Their small but sunny terrace is perfect for long hot summer nights.
The Wibautstraat has undergone a major transformation: so many cool places opened recently! One of the latest additions is NEST, a gorgeous rooftop bar on top of Casa 400. Sit back, relax and enjoy the awesome city view while relishing in greenery.
Eerste Ringrijkstraat 4
Treat yourself to a happy place! Westerpark is by far my favorite escape place in Amsterdam: it’s huge and there are as many quiet places (ah, the ponds – great for picknicks with friends) as cool new cafes and restaurants around the Westergasfabriek-area (former gasworks) to chill out for a bit. Besides the park, there’s an art-house cinema, some cool creative shops, and businesses and cool spots like the TonTonClub (let the video games begin!) and restaurants like Mossels & Gin (fresh mussels paired with great g&t’s) and Pacific Park.
Tropic vibes at Waterkant! This Surinamese-infused cool spot on the waterfront hidden under the large Euro parking lot. Find yourself eating the best Surinamese food, drinking ginger beer cocktails, dancing on bare feet and forgetting about the daily grind, while soaking up the sun.
A very Instagram-worthy place is called Hangar, located in an old – what’s in the name – hangar. Hangar’s interior can be described as a place where industrial bits and pieces meet stylish tropical-chic (golden palm trees!). Sounds good? We know, it does. Read more about this cool spot here.
The newest city beach in town! For that real summer holiday vibe, just cycle to the south in Amsterdam. StrandZuid offers lunch, dinner, and drinks. When the sun’s out, you can sit down and unwind on the new terrace with a great view over the Beatrix Park.
