Snackchat: Where to get the best hot dogs in Amsterdam
What is it about hot dogs? They make a great snack (or two) and it looks like the hot dog trend finally landed in Amsterdam. We’ve fully embraced the burger the last couple of years and it’s time to move on to the next big American thing. Yaasss!
As you might know, we’re BIG snack lovers at Chapter Friday and love to make snack curated lists like these. Did we miss on one of the best-hidden gems in the city? Let us know in the comments. We already did Snackchats on sushi, tacos, and breakfast pancakes.
Ok, on to the dogs! Whether you’re a plain ketchup person or love an haute cuisine dog with pulled pork, guacamole, and champagne on the side: we’ve done the research to find the finest hot dog locations in Amsterdam. Let’s go!
The Fat Dog
An absolute top dog. Owned by Ron Blaauw, an Amsterdam-based Michelin star chef. Indulge yourself with one of their eleven wonderful hotdogs. Absolute fave: the Vive la France, with fried mushrooms, spring onions, foie gras and truffle mayonnaise. Good to know: The Fat Dog is temporarily closed due to a ‘winter sleep’ and will open on the 1st of March again.
Bulls & Dogs
Another all time favorite is Bulls & Dogs, a concept you can find in the popular Foodhallen as in their own restaurant in De Pijp where they serve even more dogs + terribly good hot chocolates for dessert (yumm). Bulls & Dogs are famous for their crispy buns and homemade sausages and sauces. And since they serve so many great funky dogs, we would definitely recommend the platter, so you can share five hot dogs with your friends.
Bellamyplein 51 (Foodhallen) & Van Woustraat 58
Fancy a hot dog in the middle of the night? Bar Huf to the rescue! This late night dinner restaurant in the center of Amsterdam offers perfect comfort food ’til three in the morning (during weekends). Apart from burgers, fries, and ribs, Bar Huf serves great dogs too: do try the Mexican hotdog with chili con carne, jalepeños, guacamole and cheddar or the blue cheese dog with bacon. All sausages come from Brandt & Levie.
We know The Butcher for it’s terribly good and prize-winning hamburgers, but did you know they do great dogs too? Make sure to try their hot dog (who let the dogs out – €5.95), a 100 percent beef hot dog with grilled onions and The Butcher special sauce. Make sure to try some of those hand-cut sweet potato fries for on the side, too.
Albert Cuypstraat 129, Bellamyplein 51 (Foodhallen), Paleisstraat 14, Overhoeksplein
It’s not fancy, it’s not expensive and it’s definitely worth the try. The Hema hot dog is a Dutch classic (2 euro) and is loved by many. Stand in line for a warm hot dog during lunch and you will find yourself in a place where waste collectors and bankers meet for the same snack.
