Snackchat: best tacos in Amsterdam

What’s not to love about the taco? It seems like the taco has FINALLY landed in the Netherlands and that’s something we’re very excited about. Tacos come in countless mouthwatering varieties: from the classic soft Mexican taco without the cheese (remember: the Mexicans don’t put any shredded cheese, lettuce, tomato or sour cream on their tacos), to the more fusion kind of types with pulled pork (delish!) and spicy kimchi on the side. Drooling yet? There’s more.

But first, let set things straight. When talking tacos, we’re talking actual tacos. Not the dry, sandpapery store bought corn tortillas. Not the hard taco shells, that crack in half while eating it (and ending in your lap). We’re talking steaming hot soft tacos. The moist pillowy ones, ready to fall apart in your mouth. Don’t want to taco about how hungry we are right know, writing this.

Okay, so we’ve got the taco situation sorted. We’ve selected the best places to get your proper tacos in Amsterdam. Preparados… Listos, ya! (that’s Spanish for ready set go).

#1 Best Coast Tacos: Café Struik/Bar brå
Probably the best of the best. Best Coast pops up in different restaurants in Amsterdam and residents at Café Struik Tuesday – Saturday at Struik and every Tuesday at Bar brå. Changing weekly menu. Famous for its legendary fish tacos and guac. We’re hoping for a permanent location!

#2 Taqueria Tacobar
A pretty new taqueria in Amsterdam West. They offer fish, pork, beef, chicken or vegetarian tacos (5,50 each), served with homemade fresh salsas, cabbage, and chipotle cream. The sides are pretty much to die for: avocado fries (did anyone said avocado fries?!), tequila chicken legs and guac. Oh, and don’t forget to try the frozen Margarita (they’re famous for it).

#3 Los Pilones Cantina Mexico
Considered one of the best authentic Mexican restaurants in Amsterdam (no Tex-Mex). Los Pilones was founded by three Mexican Brothers who settled in Amsterdam in 2001. Now, 15 years later, they own three taquerias in Amsterdam and apart from the delicious tacos, this place is famous for its collection of more than 185 different tequilas.

#4 Taqueria Lima West
This restaurant is the newest addition to the Food Hallen in West. Taqueria Lima West is a Mexican kitchen with a Peruvian twist to it. They offer four types of tacos: Chipotle Braised Beef, Roasted Thinly Sliced Beef, Corn Fried Chicken and Marinated Pork ‘El Pastor’. You get two tacos for 9,95 euro.

#5 Calle Ocho
Calle Ocho claims to be a place where you can take your tinder-date, grandmother or your volleyball team to. It’s a cozy restaurant in the Pijp area with a small menu which changes every now and then and the chef likes to cook with Mexican and Cuban influences. He’s famous for the best fresh salsas from scratch. Make sure to try the smokey tinga chicken taco.
