Marrakesh insiders guide by Laurence Leenaert

CHAPTER FRIDAYFairy tale like Marrakesh is a lively and truly fascinating city, but you need to know where to go. It’s easy to get lost in the maze of souqs, where Berber tribes sell their leather wear, carpets and other traditional crafts (and by the time you made your choice you’ll have had enough mint tea to last a lifetime). Make sure to visit the action-packed Djemaa el-Fna square for good food and some good old street entertainment. Expect jugglers, snake charmers and story tellers, who try to impress you with a little money.

But where else to go? Let’s ask an insider for the best hotspots in town. The Belgian designer Laurence Leenaert (26) moved to Marrakech about a year ago and instantly fell in love with the city. She runs her praised accessories label LRNCE from a small riad in the center of the medina and works with a lot of artisans outside her atelier.

CHAPTER FRIDAY

For Laurence, Marrakech resembles freedom. “I have the feeling I can do anything I want in this city. That’s the reason why I moved here and expand my brand. The sun is present every day and the people are so so kind for me, always inviting me over for dinner and always asking me if I need something. They really make me feel at home. If I go back to Belgium to see my friends and family I miss everything about my life in Marrakech after a few days.”

ATAY
Laurence: “I go almost every day to this place, it has an amazing rooftop, the people who work there are my friends and super kind. You can have a juice or a Moroccan dish and enjoy the view and atmosphere from the old medina.”
62, Rue Amsefah Sidi Abdelaziz

LA FAMILLE
Laurence: “This is the most beautiful place to take a break and enjoy the hidden places in the medina. It’s located nearby the Djemaa el-Fna, featuring a small boutique shop and a garden. It’s super quite and peaceful and they serve bio healthy food.”

CHAPTER FRIDAY

WINOU
Laurence: “For the locals in Gueliz, you see every kind of Moroccan having lunch or dinner there. I always take my friends there and they love it! You can have everything for the real price and it’s good!”
77 Angle Avenue Mly Rachid Et Rue Mauritanie

BO & ZINE
Laurence: “A glamorous roadhouse great for dinner or cocktails just outside of Marrakech (3km). It has a garden with a bar surrounded by palm trees. This place is a little fancy, but the atmosphere is super great and you might want to dance later at night to southern music when the long bar area turns into a disco.”

CHAPTER FRIDAY

LA SOURCE
Laurence: “I live right in the center of the medina and from time to time I need to go out of this craziness so then I take a taxi to La Source, just 30 minutes outside Marrakesh. It’s the perfect place to go for a swim, a drink, and some food. This place is something new and not a lot of people know this place yet so no overcrowded swimming pool at all!”
Route de l’Ourika

LA PAUSE
Laurence: “For a day out and a crazy view, take the taxi to La Pause, it’s a 40 minutes drive from the city, and you’ll arrive in the small desert of Marrakesh! The place La Pause is amazing, you can have amazing food while having a swim between sand dunes! I can’t describe this very well because you really need to experience this.”
48, Derb Toudgha

BAB LE KHEMIS
Laurence: “This flea market is something special, you can find everything there. It’s one of the oldest markets in Marrakesh and I really like to go here because there you can find some treasures and I just like disappear in the crowd and enjoy the Moroccan lifestyle.”

RIAD JARDIN SECRETLaurence: “I have my small shop in this riad. Here you can find all of my stuff and check out all the carpets with embroidery, sandals and kimono’s I make with textiles from Morocco. The owners are French and have a great taste, a definitely must go!”

Great post! Marrakech is absolutely on my travel bucket list!

Gorgeous pics!! I got lost every single day I went to the Medina. It’s crazy! Thank goodness there are lovely people around all the time. My favourite spot (when I could find it) was Cafe des Espices for a delicious, healthy lunch and cold drinks. The highlight of Marrakech for me was having a hammam. http://www.tripchow.com/moroccan-hammam-marrakech-medina/

    These photos are gorgeous!
