Head beauty buyer Selina at de Bijenkorf reveals her must-have make up products
CHAPTER FRIDAY

For most of us, the Holiday season means extra focus on beauty and skincare. And who would know better than the head of beauty buying of luxury warehouse de Bijenkorf? Walking us through the newly opened Beauty World, with brands like Tom Ford, Chanel, YSL and M.A.C. stalled out on stunning marble counters, Selina Johnston reveals her must-haves.

Read on as she rounds up a handful of amazing items, and get ready to fall in love with some new favourites!

The #1 mascara and eyeliner you swear by?
Selina: “By Tom Ford! I don’t leave the house without a good wing. I use the Defining liner, with the most beautiful felt tip pen. I prefer a pen over a liquid or kohl liner. I love the mascara as well because it has a big brush. You’re either a big brush girl or a small plastic one, I’m definitely the first.”

Skin is still in! What are your top products to create a flawless face?
Selina: “A good primer is an essential. I use the Touche Éclat blur primer by Yves Saint Laurent and a Sisley under eye primer.”

And in terms of foundation… Any product tips?
Selina: “I’m not a big foundation user, but I use Bobbi Brown’s BB cream with SPF 35 because it simply feels good on the skin. It’s creamy and thin and it’s just light enough. After AA, BB, CC and DD creams, I keep returning to this one. I used to wear Estée Lauder Double Wear light and on days I’d like some more coverage, I still do.”

A special trick in your make-up routine?
Selina: “Whenever I wear my red lipstick it tends to bleed into my lips. I always use a lip pencil just to make sure I’m sealing the edges. And I’ll add a bit of dark powder on the cupids bow and underneath the bottom lip, to really make them pop.”

Is there a lip shade you like for fall/winter in particular?
Selina: “I go for the really dark plum. Chanel does amazing deep red shades. Because my hair is dark, I’ll use a little Dior fake tan first… I need to be a bit bronzed, but with light hair, pale skin and a good set of eyebrows you could easily rock it too.”

Is seems to be the year of the brow. Any big trends?
Selina: “The bold brows are definitely here to stay. Brows are getting more and more important. They key is to do whatever looks good on you. You can use make-up as fashion, but the reality is, it’s an every day thing. My tip is to look as natural as possible when it comes to eyebrows.”

An essential you always have with you?
Selina: “Fragrance. I’ve been wearing Coco Chanel ever since I can remember. Gabrielle Coco Chanel was the reason I went into this industry. I have this fascination with the romantic side of Coco Chanel. Still today, the brand is always true to itself.”

What product should we invest in?
Selina: “Don’t underestimate the power of a good set of make-up brushes! Laura Mercier makes the most spectacular ones. A good pair of Tweezers should be in every girls kit – mister Tweezerman is my guy.”

Skincare you’re excited about right now?
Selina: “I’m a traditional girl. I use La Prairie, the Caviar Skin Lux cream. It’s expensive, but you don’t need much. Luckily I’ve been blessed with good skin, but it comes from within. Biggest beauty tip: never put your face in the sun and don’t smoke. I always cleanse with Kiehl’s, it makes me feel clean and fresh. My shampoo and conditioner is also by Kiehl, hair, face, body, aaaall of it.”

PS. Feel inspired to go beauty hunting but need an extra hand at picking what works for you? My fave thing about Beauty World (aside from all the marble… duh!) is the experiences I’ve had so far with the artists behind the counters.

Dior and Yves Saint Laurent have trained fragrance experts to help you pick a signature scent, the make-up advice at Tom Ford is very on point and there are a ton of treatments to pamper yourself pre-Holidays. Happy beautifying!

I never send money on skincare products, because I prefer spending my money on things right where I can see it ( interior and closet ). But still, I would love to pay more attention to skincare and beauty.

It’s so worth it! I’ve just ‘invested’ in a stunning highlighter and in a few bright lipsticks. You can start at anywhere under 20 euros with those, and it makes your outfit pop! Currently I’m wearing all grey with a super bright pink lipstick and it just makes everything fun :)
