Our favourite (girl power) Ted Talks to boost your year
tavi

When it comes to narrowing down the TED Talks that suit CHAPTER FRIDAY, it’s safe to say the task is nearly impossible. There is simply so, so, so much out there to get informed and inspired by. However. To brighten up your week halfway through and to obtain some valuable new insights, we’ve trimmed it down to five. These go-getters have a lesson to share that you might want to hear and take with you in to the New Year, and it’s just a mouse click (and fifteen minutes of your day) away…

Tavi Gevinson: A young teen trying to figure out life (oh, and modern day feminism!)
In this TED talk the then fifteen-year-old blogger and actress Tavi Gevinson illustrates how the conversations on sites like Rookie, her wildly popular web magazine for and by teen girls, are putting a new, complex face on modern feminism.

Cameron Russel: Looks aren’t everything. Believe me, I’m a model
Top model Cameron Russel explains in this illuminating TED Talk that you shouldn’t strive to look like the girls in the magazines, because not even the girls in the magazines look like the girls in the magazines (still following?).

Sheryl Sandberg: Why we have too few women leaders
This is a great, unconventional, persuasive take on the way that women take themselves out of the running for leadership positions. Definitely an interesting one to see what you recognize from your personal, daily experiences.

Brené Brown: The power of vulnerability
This is one of the most popular TED Talks of all time and it’s all about allowing vulnerability as a way to be stronger (really!). As Brown explains here, vulnerability is essential to our relationships and success.

Jill Bolte Taylor: My stroke of insight
Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor is a neuroscientist who specializes in strokes. So when she suffered from one herself, she instantly knew what was happening. Her story is quite a moving and unique one that’s worth a watch.

Of course this selection of five films is just a snippet of what’s out there. So is there any other TED Talk besides these five that you really enjoyed watching? Do share in the comments, we’d love to check it out!

I love TED videos for inspiration as well, and watch them a lot for getting blog post ideas…

I live in Norway, and stayed awake for an entire night to watch TED Australia live…

    Great blog you have,,,

Great post! I LOVE TED talks but sometimes it’s hard to sift through them all and find the ones that most pertain to you. I’ve seen the Cameron Russel one before and had thought of putting it on my blog since it is very apt and important for young girls to hear. I know as I started in the fashion industry as a model and the way it seems from the outside is not at all as it really is when you are working within the industry! I was on a billboard in my town but my lab partner at school had no idea I was a model or could be one and didn’t believe it was me in the photo! I was just a normal girl and it’s the talent of everyone else that makes models appear so “perfect”.
    Love your blog

Een mooie tedtalk is over stress: make stress your friend van kelly mcGonigal.
Een bottom line daarin is dat wanneer je positief over het hebben van stress denkt, de negatieve effecten van stress op t lichaam verdwijnen. Zoiets, zij vertelt het veel beter, echt interessant om een te horen.

When I was in high school, my teacher showed our class the one about the model. It was very inspiring. I will have to check out the others. Have a wonderful New Year!
