CareerCareer Tips 1 October 2014
Four ways to keep your mind organized

Ah, the never ending struggle: how to organize our days so we don’t forget important things, we don’t lose essential items (like keys!) and to make the most of the limited time we have. We attempt to organize our lives, our homes, our desks – the less clutter the better. But there’s one thing that is extremely difficult to keep clear: a cluttered mind.

We tend to have so many to do’s that we suffer from a brain-overload every now and then. The go getter girls among us probably know what we’re talking about. ;) When you have a busy career, your head is constantly overflowing with tasks that still need to be done, full with new projects you want to land and thoughts about what to eat when you finally do have time to go home. But if doing less isn’t an option, how do you keep your mind thinking clearly? Here are a few tips that might help you on your way. It’s time to unwind!

Organize every once in a while
Every now and then it’s OK to make a clean slate. File away important documents, throw away old papers and make a fresh start. Once your workspace feels cleaned up again, your mind will be able to let go a little bit and you’ll be able to think clearly again.

Write stuff down
Your brain is dealing with lots and lots of information on a daily basis. By writing stuff down, you’ll be able to take things out of your head and instead, put them on paper. It helps you to divide tasks, ideas, concerns and questions from each other.

Divide your tasks - ranging from no biggies to big deals
Chances are your brain is going crazy during a busy day at the office. One moment you’re brainstorming over a big project you’re working on – the next moment you’re texting your lover (or friends) about dinner plans. Your mind is constantly switching between tasks that take much effort and tasks that are slightly less important, but still consume a lot of energy. Try to divide your tasks, handle the smaller to do’s first and then you’ll have the peace and quiet to completely set your brains on a big and bold project.

Let go of the attempt to organize
Though it’s nice to have an organized life, you don’t have to organize everything. At some point you should just accept the pile of papers on your desk that never seems to go away and your stuffed e-mail inbox. Obsessing over your not-so-organized life will only work against you.
