For a lot of people the words work and fun are antithetical. But for Anne Kiemeneij (28) - who works as a campaign manager at VICE - they absolutely aren’t. Anne is responsible for a lot of CHAPTER FRIDAY’S branded editorials (like this one!) and we don’t just meet at the coffee machine, we discuss brand solutions and endless Excel plannings and goofball on Friday afternoon. Since we work together closely, I asked Anne how she landed her job at VICE and what makes her workplace the best there is.
What does a day on your job look like?
Anne: “Monday is an important day for content campaigns, this is the day we start with advertorials and social posts. Before the weekend begins I need approvals from all of my clients, so our campaigns can start on time. If a new week starts and campaigns are sold, it’s my job to brief sites in our digital network and receive the right content on schedule. You can say I’m the glue to our publishers and clients. It’s my responsibility to ensure content campaigns are ready, set, go.”
Name 3 qualities you need to have to be a great campaign manager.
Anne: “You have to be flexible, patient and responsible.”
What education did you do to get where you are now?
Anne: “I’ve studied Media Management and Graphic Design. After school I decided to work at a marketing agency where I was responsible for advertising campaigns for magazines. Later on I’ve worked for different companies in sales but realized quickly I really wanted to do projects from the beginning till the end. The chance to get a job at VICE ever, was very unlikely in my head. But, here I am! If you really want something, you’ll definitely find your way.”
What’s it like to work at VICE? People tend to think it’s very rock and roll.
Anne: “VICE is a hard working company. The most of us are all youngsters who like to party from time to time, but we do simply do our work well and play with just as much as energy!”
What makes your job super fun?
Anne: “Corny maybe, but my experience of working at VICE is that every day is a different day. It’s challenging to work with so many deadlines.”
Your biggest fail to date? Or do you have a nightmare scenario?
Anne: “I don’t like this question! Let’s say: a planning has to be super tight.”
You said you are the glue between bloggers and brands. Do you communicate with each of them differently?
Anne: “Every brand has its own identity and so do people. Each brand, site or blogger is unique - this also applies to sites and bloggers in our digital network. Building a long-lasting relationship is crucial and very important. Sometimes I assume people can handle my jokes, but instead of laughing there’s this awkward silence, haha.”
Do you think bloggers are the new celebrities?
Anne: “Or maybe the question is; are celebrities the new bloggers? Well in some kind of way, yes. For some brands, it’s far more valuable to work with a blogger. They’re experts, have an engaging community and a big reach. I think bloggers are very powerful influencers.”
Very cool post. I love reading about how people’s jobs can be so interesting and diverse, and often different from what you’d expect based on what they studied. thanks for sharing
Als student die een beetje de weg kwijt is vind ik dit heel interessant en inspirerend. Thanks voor deze posts!

One of the best pieces of advice :) If you go where others will quit, there’s always a place for you!
I think one of the biggest problems I had when I was choosing what to study was that I didn’t know about these kind of jobs. I guess it is still not too late. Thanks for the great interview!

I agree! I think going to school is really important but sometimes there’s a huge disconnect between reality and what you learn there :)
Wat een super leuk interview! X
