If anyone can set an example for working yourself up to the position of CEO in an unconventional way (our favourite position!) it has to be Sophia Amoruso. This self-made super girl built her very own fashion empire and went from shopping assistant to founder of NastyGal, one of the coolest and fastest growing (to illustrate in bucks: the company made $100 million in sales last year) clothing companies in the business.
In her book #GIRLBOSS Sophia gives advice about business, life and how to get exactly what you desire. Her advice is not sugar coated, vague or contemplated: it is straightforward, honest and oh so on point. But given that we’re not in a book store but behind our screens right now, we’re serving you some bite sized bits of inspiration by miss Amaruso herself. Which quote do you identify most with at this point in your life?
Here are some of the majorly inspiring things this game-changing lady said:
1. “Life is short. Don’t be lazy.”
2. “If you believe that what you’re doing will have positive results, it will— even if it’s not immediately obvious.”
3. “Luxury can be a great experience, and the things around you should represent the life that you’ve made for yourself, as long as you are taking the time to appreciate those items.”
4. “Abandon anything about your life and habits that might be holding you back. Learn to create your own opportunities. Know that there is no finish line; fortune favors action. Race balls-out toward the extraordinary life that you’ve always dreamed of, or still haven’t had time to dream up. And prepare to have a hell of a lot of fun along the way.”
5. “Remember: Don’t ever grow up. Don’t become a bore. Don’t ever let the Man get to you.”
6. “If I, and this book, have anything to prove, it’s that when you believe in yourself, other people will believe in you, too.”
7. “You combine hard work, creativity, and self-determination, and things start to happen.”
8. “Harvard Business School professor Howard Stevenson famously defined “entrepreneurship” as “the pursuit of opportunity without regard to resources currently controlled.” I give a “hell yes” to that definition—you should take that spirit with you to whatever job you’re doing or whatever project you’re undertaking.”
9. “It’s cool to be kind. It’s cool to be weird. It’s cool to be honest and to be secure with yourself.”
10. “When you begin with the finish line in mind, you miss all the fun stuff along the way.”
11. “Money looks better in the bank than on your feet.”
12. “Clothing is ultimately the suit of armor in which we battle the world.”
13. “Forcing me to figure out how to provide for myself was probably one of the best things my parents ever did for me.”
14. “Entrepreneurial people are passionate about what they do, comfortable with taking risks, and quick at moving on from failures.”
15. “Opinions are like assholes; everybody’s got one.”
16. “I believe that there is a silver lining in everything, and once you begin to see it, you’ll need sunglasses to combat the glare.”
17. “We trusted our instincts, and stuck to the two tenets of my philosophy: Sell things for more than you pay for them, and save more than you spend. Simple, yes, but that is the philosophy that ultimately led to a really big business.”
18. “It is she who listens to the rest of the world who fails, and it is she who has enough confidence to define success and failure for herself who succeeds.”
19. “There’s a certain freedom to beeing an outsider. You do what you want, say what you want, and move on when you’ve worn out your welcome.”
20. “My dad said at dinner the other night something that I really loved — he said, ‘Hope is not a strategy,’ which is so true. The best things happen with not only hope, but ingenuity, self-awareness, and a lot of elbow grease. That’s when the real magic happens.”
21. “For a long time I kept the piece of paper that tallied up everything that had been in the shopping cart the day I got busted. It was a little reminder of how close I’d been to killing my inner #GIRLBOSS, and of how thankful I was that she lived.”
22. “When your goal is to gain experience, perspective and knowledge, failure is no longer a possibility. Failure is your invention.”
23. “Each time you make a good decision or do something nice or take care of yourself; each time you show up to work and work hard and do your best at everything you can do, you’re planting seeds for a life that you can only hope will grow beyond your wildest dreams.”
24. “You don’t get taken seriously by asking someone to take you seriously. You’ve got to show up and own it. If this is a man’s world, who cares? I’m still really glad to be a girl in it.”
25. “Bad bitches are taking over the world.”

I love #girlboss! It’s my current bible! My favorite quote from the book, that really stuck with me is “Your money looks better in a bank than on your feet” that really really got me! now I’m all about seeing my bank accoun’t number grow and she’s right, it does look better in the bank, well my bank account! LOL :D
That really is a good one, even though it is a pretty hard one to follow. But it is very true… x

I’m reading #GIRLBOSS at the moment (and so is my boyfriend)… One day I hope to be half as successful and funny as Sophia.
A great post!
Didn’t she just stepped down of her position at NastyGal ?
Great quotes, still !
I think some people may not agree with number 11!!

I really identify with quote #22. I think if you spend your time comparing yourself with others who have achieved or you have set yourself up with a very specific goal in mind and race towards it you may start to feel like you are a failure, but if you plan on learning from every experience, enjoying it then you will feel accomplished and successful.
Thanks for the post! Maybe I should read her book..

Before I read her book I had never heard of her, but she’s so inspiring. I became motivated instantly. She rocks!
Such an amazing book!
Thanks for sharing, in general all these quotes are inspirational and what Sophia did is as well. However, I fear the quotes are not necessarily applicable to everyone’s life or where that will end up. For example, working hard and creative and keep on going will not always get you where you want to be, more factors are involved in that, I believe.
Ik houuu van quotes, ze maken het leven soms zo’n stuk mooier!
