You may think that sleeping on a plane is a myth for those in economy class, but it is possible! Red-eyed or not, sometimes you just want to spend your flight sleeping - however, it takes practice. It’s an art form, and one we’ve spent countless hours failing and then mastering. Here are a few tips that might make nodding off just a little bit easier.
Before takeoff
Choose your side: It makes sense, doesn’t it - if you sleep on your right side, then book your seat on the right side of the plane. If you’re a leftie, try booking on your left. Try getting a window seat and you’ll have a little bit of extra snuggle space.
Information is key: No good at deciding where to sit? There’s a site for that - thanks Internet. Seat Guru allows you to see the layouts of planes, comfort levels and which seats are the best on a specific plane.
During flight
Comfortable travel: Wear nice, clean and comfy clothes. If you carry your suit with you, you may want to change into it when you get off the plane, you’ll look refreshed and good to go.
Cradle: Ugly or not, try taking one of these U shaped pillows with you. The trick to these little pillows is to wear it backwards, so your next stays in place, no more sudden forward neck-snapping moments.
Scent bliss: Spritz your U pillow, or sweater with a little lavender oil or some other calming scent to settle your nerves.
Back-up sleep essentials: Bring a thick beanie - as soon you take off you can pull the beanie over your eyes, keeping light from your eyes, giving you a little privacy and much needed air-co resistant warm. If you’re going all out on sleep accessories, try bringing silicon earplugs and some woollen cosy socks - they’ll be sure give you that extra little push into dozing off.

Great tips! Really needed!!

Oooh, I’m not a fan of spraying things because smells on planes are weird and adding something else would bother people. I’m a big believer in the “don’t do to others…”
What I do is TAKE A PILL. I eat, swallow my magic pill and voila! 13 hour flight turns into a 2 hour flight. DELICIIOUS.
Oh wow, what kind of PIL is this? Spill the beaaans!
I love a scarf as a multipurpose travel tool - can work as a eye mask or a blanket. Also, like to travel in an oversized hoodie for the same reason you mention the beanie (plus it’s snuggly). Add an eye mask and ear plugs and I might look weird, but I’m set!
Great post! I’ve never had problems with sleeping on planes, though. Perhaps because sleep always plays a secondary role when I travel (partying/sightseeing/working comes first). I once slept through the entire Lisbon-Frankfurt flight and had to be woken up by a flight attendant after we have landed haha.
Hahaha, wow! You are a true example of professional sleepy flyers!
great tips, I try to snuggle down as much as I can. a window seat is always a plus

Wait, what do you mean backwards? Backwards how? I always thought the space should be in the front?

Hi Lesia,
Hahaha, that’s what we thought first too, but after a little research we discovered this: http://lifehacker.com/5643844/wear-your-neck-pillow-backwards-for-nod-free-airline-sleep
What do you think - would it work?
This was such a perfect post for me since I’ll be flying in the summer. I like the idea of spritzing a calming scent; will be taking my favorite perfume with me.
But please keep in mind that spritzing yourself or your pillow might make the perfume-sensitive person next to you remain sleepless for the duration of the flight.
Yep, not anyone likes (or isn’t allergic to) perfume
