Once in a while I come across a hype that gets me. Usually I’m the kind of person who resents massive media attention for someone or something, but the whole #GIRLBOSS campaign worked overtime and it worked for me. Sophia Amoruso - founder and CEO of Nasty Gal - wrote a book about life, business and getting what you want.
Not only did the cover of the book made me drool, I’m always on the hunt for some good advice on (shitty) jobs and life lessons by remarkable chicks who’ve made it. One of these chicks is definitely Yara, who already helped me out a dozen times when I went totally blank on a tricky email about work or when she came with a clever insight I didn’t considered myself.
Back to #GIRLBOSS. So, hyped up as I was, I immediately bought the book and I have to say: it opened my eyes in lots of different ways. Sophia had made Nasty Gal a multimillion dollar business by the time she turned 29, so she surely knows her stuff. There are some quotes that kept floating in my head and I would like to share some #GIRLBOSS knowlegde, so you get a taste of what this book is all about. These three lines (out of hundreds of brainy ones) define Sophia’s outlook on career:
On giving memorable answers in a job interview, because the person sitting on the other side of the table is going to spend a minimum of eight hours a day with you - you have to be either smart, genuinely funny or witty: “If you’re going into a job interview, you should always be prepared to have smart answers to smart questions, but also smart answers to dumb questions.”
On our Millenium-generation, our impatience (it’s true, hopeless) and how we want everything (a skyrocketing career with an even bigger income) and nothing (being lazy) at the same time, which is mission impossible: “IWWIWWWIWI - I Want What I Want When and When I Want It. We want everything now and we want it all. But like everything, you’ve got to work for what you want.”
On finding what you love to do and trying different jobs and schools. There is a place for you, but there’s no straight line to the perfect job: “Look up and look around, and if you’re not finding something inspiring, then you’re probably not looking hard enough.”
The book is currently on my nightstand as a reminder to be a total badass everyday, but I’m sure I will pass it on to another (future) #GIRLBOSS soon.
Are you planning on reading #GIRLBOSS anytime soon?
