bed copy

It’s just one of those nights. You can’t sleep, are busy staring at the ceiling and you have to wake up early in the morning. Thoughts of stress are running through your mind and you just can’t seem to stop brooding. But don’t panic, it’s actually a pretty common thing - rest assured - there is a solution. So why are you unable to sleep, and more important: what can you do about it?

10 reason why you can’t sleep:
- Workaholic
- Clock-watching
- Caffeine
- Late nights
- Hunger
- Hormones
- Booze
- Snoring
- Smoking
- Sleep disorders

What you can do about it:

Workaholic - working too hard or being too stressed can cause all kinds of problems. And sleeping problems is just one of them. Take a step back and see if you’re overworked.

Clock-watching - you can’t sleep and you keep checking the time, counting down the hours until your alarm goes off. Put your watch or phone somewhere you can’t reach it to check the time, it will make you feel more relaxed.

Caffeine - yup, coffee is truly godly, but after your 4th cup of the day you may want to consider sipping on juice or water for the rest of the day.

Late nights - sometimes too many late nights lead to late wake-ups too. The later you wake up, the more you’re enforcing your bad sleeping habits, you’re pretty much giving yourself self induced jet-lag. Force yourself to get up super early and you’ll be sure to start feeling sleepier earlier and earlier in the evenings.

Hunger - if you’re so hungry your growling stomach is keeping you awake, you might want to eat dinner later in the evening.

Hormones - if you’re going through a lot of body changes, try taking a hot bath before going to bed, meditation or try reading a kick-ass chick book to let your body know it’s time to chill.

Snoring - funnily enough, if your significant other’s a snorer, this could be a deal breaker. Try sleeping with special ear plugs or try to get your partner to try some methods to reduce how loud they snore, you’ll be out like a light in no time once it’s solved.

Smoking - sorry guys, if you’re a frequent smoker your body is likely to be going into a nicotine withdrawal every time you go to sleep, meaning you’re likely to wake up an extra 15-20 times.

Sleep disorders - this is a trickier one to solve. If you think that you may have a sleeping disorder, set up a meeting with your doctor and ask them for advice. Maybe even try some home remedies such as drinking a cup of warm milk or eating a kiwi an hour before bed.
