List of my 10 fall essentials
51lowres 34 2lowres

At the beginning of a season I like to put together a list of what my personal essentials are – to see what I always fall back to (so is worth an investment) and what gaps I need to fill. I just dropped by our one and only luxury department store De Bijenkorf to select a few fall/winter pieces for a fun styling project (online next week!) and couldn’t have picked items that suit my wardrobe essentials better. For fall and winter, my personal list probably goes like this:

1) A heavy biker jacket
Acne releases a new version of their signature Velocite shearling jackets. It’s the one I’ve dreamt about for years – heavy, oversized, in suede with leather and wool. The price tag is rather hefty at a little over 2.000 euros but if it’s in your budget it’s definitely worth the investment. If I can ever find last years’ black suede version, I’m going to cave!

2) Leather trousers
Leather braces you for the cold and instantly dresses you up and gives a rock star edge. I like to offset the trousers – it can look a bit harsh – with something sporty like a grey sweater, heels and clean hair and make-up. I own a pair by Muubaa and tried on a buttery soft one by UK label All Saints that just opened a shop-in-shop in De Bijenkorf. Worth a look!

3) A fluffy jacket or cardi
Well if there’s anything you could take away from reading This chick’s got style, it’s that I’m obsessed with fluffy cardigans and jackets. Somehow I’ve fallen for the bulky style and I live in faux furs in winter and wear woolly knits anywhere in between seasons. I own them from all kinds of brands – the one in the photo is a jacket by Étoile Isabel Marant

4) Black skinnies
Finding your perfect fitting pair of black skinny jeans is like finding a husband. You know when it’s the one! (Coming from a single gal, but surely I’ve seen enough romantic comedies to understand how that works). I am devoted to my Paige skinny jeans – I believe the style is called Verdugo – that I’ve worn so shamelessly often they are now dark grey.

5) Ankle boots with a high heel
All those layers, knits and coats can make you (and when I say you I mean me, because I’m only 1.62 tall) look a bit plump. I prefer not to wear open heels when it’s freezing cold so look for cool boots with a high heel for comfort and some added height and elegance. These ones by Diesel would work so well for me and so do these by Acne – I’d love to wear them right now with bare legs, a black wrap skirt and a jumper.

6) Flat motor boots
An absolute shoe-must that I personally wear throughout seasons. (I mean, what’s a cooler festival look than a slip dress or denim cut offs with a set of sturdy biker boots? Exactly.) On my I-might-actually-take-the-plunge-this-month-in-New-York-and-go-broke wishlist are the Balenciaga cut outs that we’ve all come to know and love.

7) A mohair jumper
Try one in the creamy colors like baby pink or light blue that are such a major trend for fall. Black and off white always work as well. Once again, turn to Acne or Filippa K.

8) A grey sweater
The fall equivalent to a white t-shirt. This works with everything. Even – or especially? – with just a pair of adorable Stella McCartney briefs on a Sunday morning at home (you wild child!).

9) A printed or coloured skirt
To add some girlyness and brightness to a mostly cream/black/grey list of basics. I’d opt for black with embroidery or subtle prints for fall, or a rich colour like wine red or navy. A shorter, heavier skirt, be it a straight shape or the T by Alexander Wang drape skirt in burgundy (drool!), works for countless occasions and is so easy to dress up (t-shirt, boyfriend blazer, heels) or down (grey sweater, thick tights, motor boots, messy hair).

10) Something animal print
All things leopard this way please! This dress by 3.1 Phillip Lim combines sweater fabric with a favourite print. Yay! I’d wear this with black tights, high heeled ankle boots and a sleek ponytail for anything from work to drinks with friends.

All items seen are from the new fall/winter collections at De Bijenkorf.
